Baltimore Ransomware Attack Costs Millions
The city of Baltimore was recently hit with a crippling ransomware attack, bringing most of the city's servers down and affecting everything from bill payments to government communications. Baltimore has refused to pay, so the hackers seem to have upped the ante.
A newly-created Twitter account claims to show screenshots of sensitive information purloined from the Baltimore cyberattack. In most ransomware attacks, the thief is content to threaten to raise the price after a certain amount of time and eventually delete all the data. The ransom note says the hackers had infiltrated the computer networks and had access for days. The left off with "All we know is MONEY! Hurry up! Tik Tak, Tik Tak, Tik Tak!"
Baltimore is not alone in the list of government entities falling victim to ransomware attacks this year. Other victims include Albany, NY; Atlanta, GA; Cleveland, OH; Greenville, NC; and quite a few more. Plenty of businesses have been ransomware victims as well, and the sad thing is that it's usually pretty easy to prevent if you know what to look for. That's where our security awareness training comes in to save the day. Set up a consultation with us ASAP to make sure you're not added to the list of ransomware victims.
